By the evening he was first, 3′27″ ahead of Fiorenzo Magni. The route crossed the Passo di Costalunga, the Rolle, the Gobbera and the gravel of the Brocon before the final climb to Monte Bondone, above Trento, with the finish at 1,272-1,300 metres. The Bondone was one of three new Dolomite climbs in that Giro; today the race’s website measures it from Trento at 17.3 km and an average of 8.2%, up to 1,650 metres at Vason.

Climb

Altitude (m)

Passo di Costalunga

1,745-1,753

Passo Rolle

1,970-1,989

Passo Gobbera

988

Passo del Brocon, gravel

1,616

Monte Bondone, finish

1,272-1,300

The climbs of Merano-Monte Bondone, 242 km.

01 · THAT MORNING

24th

Gaul’s place in the general classification before Merano-Monte Bondone, 16-17 minutes behind the pink jersey. Two days after the Bondone he rode into Milan in pink, with the same 3′27″ over Magni he had on the evening of the stage. Fantini, second on the Bondone, finished sixth. Of the 105 who had started in Milan, 43 finished. Over the whole race Gaul covered 3,523 km in just over 101 hours and 39 minutes, at an average of about 34.7 km/h; on the Bondone he had ridden at about 26.5.
