It is the spot that separates a team from the Giro d’Italia: since 2026 a Grand Tour organiser can give a wild card only to teams that finished the ranking season in the top thirty. The ranking season ends on 18 October, with the Veneto Classic.

Bruno Reverberi, who has run the team since 1982, has announced an appeal. His argument fits in one sentence: “if they don’t invite us, how are we supposed to score points…”. The season’s numbers back him up on one specific point: points are handed out mostly in races a Professional team gets into only if someone invites it.

On 15 October he said it again on television: if you are not invited, how can you race, and how can you score points? And he explained what it means for an Italian team: how can you run a professional team with 50 staff without knowing whether you will ride the Giro, the country’s most important race.

Our petition · Change.org

Bardiani CSF at the 2027 Giro d’Italia: UCI, change the top 30 wild card rule

Sign the petition →

The top 30 rule applies to Grand Tour wild cards

From top 50 to top 30 in three seasons

The rule is in Article 2.1.007 bis of the UCI road regulations. Grand Tour wild cards, the invitations the organiser picks at its own discretion, could go only to teams in the top 50 of the ranking for the 2024 season and the top 40 for 2025. From 2026 onwards the threshold is 30th place, in the ranking closed on the last day of the previous season.

For the 2027 Giro d’Italia, the 2026 ranking is therefore what counts. The limit applies only to Grand Tours: for other World Tour races, organisers remain free to invite whichever Professional teams they like.

Who gets in as of right

The 18 WorldTeams have a place on the start line. From 2026 the three best Professional teams of the previous season are also guaranteed an invitation to every World Tour race, Grand Tours included: for 2026 they were Tudor, Q36.5 and Cofidis. The organiser is left with two wild cards, plus one for every invited team that declines.

That is exactly what happened at the 2026 Giro. Cofidis had not planned to ride it, and on 20 February RCS Sport handed out three wild cards: to Polti VisitMalta, Bardiani and Unibet Rose Rockets. The rules also require at least one team from the organiser’s country at a Grand Tour; Italy has no WorldTeam, but it has two Professional teams inside the top 30, Polti and Solution Tech.

Thirty places, but for Professional teams there are twelve

The 13 October ranking

Pos.

Team

Category

Points

28

MBH Bank CSB Telecom Fort

Professional

2.729

29

Euskaltel-Euskadi

Professional

2.693,26

30

Team Picnic PostNL

WorldTeam

2.680

31

Bardiani CSF 7 Saber

Professional

2.644,15

32

Li Ning Star

Continental

2.508,33

The UCI team ranking at 13 October 2026, from 28th to 32nd place.

The top thirty positions hold 18 WorldTeams and 12 Professional teams. In practice, the threshold opens the Giro to the top twelve Professional teams, and Bardiani are thirteenth. In 30th place sit Picnic PostNL, a WorldTeam who go to the Giro anyway: they occupy one of the thirty places without needing it.

More points than in 2025, one place lower

A year ago Bardiani finished thirtieth with 2,550 points and got into the 2026 Giro by a single place. Solution Tech-Vini Fantini, 31st, were left out. In 2026 Bardiani have already scored more points than in 2025, but have dropped one position: the bar has gone up.

It has gone up because the teams around them have changed. Picnic PostNL were 17th in 2025 with 8,700 points and have slid to the bottom of the top 30; MBH Bank have climbed from 47th to 28th, Euskaltel from 34th to 29th. Bardiani, 24th in 2023 and 27th in 2024, have been sliding for three seasons.

At the Veneto Classic they need an eighth place

Sixty points from Euskaltel

On 14 October, at the Giro del Veneto, Bardiani took 20 points with Filippo Turconi’s 12th place, Euskaltel-Euskadi 30 and MBH Bank 86. With those points, Bardiani are still about 60 points short of overtaking Euskaltel, who currently hold 30th place; MBH Bank are about 150 points further up.

The ranking season closes on Sunday 18 October with the Veneto Classic, from Cittadella to Bassano del Grappa, 158.5 km. It is a .Pro race: from 2026 it gives the winner 250 points, 170 to second, 140 to third, then 120, 100, 80, 70, 60, 50 and 40 down to tenth, and further points down to 40th place.

The possible scenarios

If Euskaltel score no points, Bardiani need only an eighth place, or two results adding up to at least 60 points, such as a tenth and an eleventh. If Euskaltel take the 20 points for twelfth, Bardiani need sixth place; with the 40 for tenth, fifth; with the 80 for sixth, the podium.

The sum is simple: Bardiani need about 60 points more than Euskaltel score. To overtake MBH Bank as well, they would need a second place with the Hungarians scoring no points.

Who is racing and where

21 teams are entered for the Veneto Classic, among them Bardiani, Euskaltel and MBH Bank, along with Polti VisitMalta and Solution Tech. Picnic PostNL are riding the Tour of Guangxi, in the World Tour, which finishes the same day: in the first four stages they have taken 108 points. Li Ning Star, 32nd, are riding neither.

The Eneco Tour also runs until 18 October, a .1 stage race in which Picnic are the only one of the teams in the fight to take part, still without points. We are following the Veneto Classic live on the race page.

The points are in the invitation-only races

The World Tour is worth more than half of the points

In 2026, men’s road races, from the World Tour down to .2, have handed out about 360 thousand UCI points up to mid-October. The World Tour accounts for about 54% of them, in fewer than one race day in five. A World Tour classic hands out about 3,350 points, a one-day .Pro about 1,275, a .1 about 610, a .2 about 150.

In stage races the ratio is the same: a World Tour stage is worth about 910 points, a .Pro stage about 310, a .1 stage about 150. The 2026 Giro d’Italia alone handed out about 24,500, more than nine times Bardiani’s entire season.

Bardiani in the World Tour: 31 days out of 181

Bardiani have raced 181 days in 2026. In the World Tour they have done 31, all by invitation: Strade Bianche, Tirreno-Adriatico, Milan-San Remo, the Giro and Il Lombardia. There they took about 320 points, 12% of their season; the rest comes from .Pro, .1 and .2 races.

Picnic PostNL, who have a place in every World Tour race, have raced 152 days there and taken about 1,360 points, around half of their total. A WorldTeam builds its ranking where the points are plentiful; a Professional team has to look for them where the invitations come. Without invitations there are no points, and without points the invitations don’t come.

To score points Bardiani went to China and Uzbekistan

In 2026 Bardiani have raced 46 days outside Europe, against 27 in 2025 and 22 in 2024: 21 in China, 8 in Malaysia, 7 in Uzbekistan, 5 in Azerbaijan, 4 in Armenia and one in the United States. Around a third of their points came from those races.

At the Tour of Magnificent Qinghai, in China, they took 230 points: almost as many as in the three weeks of the Giro, where they scored 252. Manuele Tarozzi won the Tour of Shanghai, Marco Manenti a stage of the Baku-Khankendi in Azerbaijan.

Reverberi calls it “something out of this world”: “instead of rewarding the best teams, they have forced us to go racing all over the world”. In his view the ranking does not measure merit, because teams do not ride the same races: “One does a hundred races, another does thirty, one rides WorldTour races, another doesn’t…”.

The Reverberi team has been at the Giro since 1982

Forty-four Giri in forty-five editions

The team was born in 1982 as Termolan-Galli, founded by Bruno Reverberi; today he runs it alongside his son Roberto. In those years Davide Cassani turned professional with the team. Then came the names on the jerseys: Navigare from 1990, Ceramica Panaria from 2000, CSF from 2008, Colnago-CSF from 2010, Bardiani from 2013.

The team has been at the Giro d’Italia 44 times in 45 editions: the only absence is 2009. Since 2010 that is seventeen Giri in a row. They have won at least 26 stages, from Stefano Allocchio’s two in 1990 to Giulio Ciccone’s in 2016.

The young Italians who came through

Bardiani made a name for themselves by taking young Italian riders to the Giro. Sonny Colbrelli rode for them from 2010 to 2016, before winning Paris-Roubaix and the European Championships in 2021 with Bahrain. Giulio Ciccone won the tenth stage of the 2016 Giro at 21, in the colours of Bardiani.

Filippo Zana turned professional with the team in 2020 and in 2022 won the Italian championship at Alberobello, the youngest winner since 2005. Giulio Pellizzari was the youngest rider at the 2024 Giro; the following year he moved to Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe. Alessandro Fiorelli, six seasons at Bardiani, moved to Visma | Lease a Bike in 2026.

The appeal and the invitations for the 2027 Giro

Reverberi has said the team will appeal and recalled that they already made one on the same ranking two years ago. His point lies in the regulations: a Professional team outside the top three gets into World Tour races only by invitation.

The invitations to the 2027 Giro d’Italia are decided by RCS Sport. The 2026 wild cards arrived on 20 February; those for 2025 on 31 March, after the UCI had enlarged the Grand Tour field to 23 teams.

The top 30 rule has to change

A merit threshold makes sense if everyone can try to clear it on equal terms. This one counts points without asking where they could be won, and so rewards those who have already been invited: the merit it measures is largely that of having been invited.

Bardiani’s case shows it in figures, but the rule weighs on every team that lives off invitations, and more so in countries without a WorldTeam, like Italy. That is why la fagIAnata is launching a petition on Change.org, “Bardiani CSF at the 2027 Giro d’Italia: UCI, change the top 30 wild card rule”, asking the UCI to change Article 2.1.007 bis.

The petition asks that the threshold not apply to at least one team from the organiser’s country, or that the points from invitation-only races not alone decide who can be invited. It asks the Italian Cycling Federation and the professional cycling league to take the request to the UCI, and RCS Sport to support it. It holds even if Bardiani get back into the top 30 on Sunday: the problem is the rule, not one place.

Article written with the help of Mnemosyne.

Sources

UCI, “Titre II – Épreuves sur route, changements au règlement applicables au 01.04.2025 (art. 2.1.007 bis)”.

UCI, “The number of teams participating in the men’s Grand Tours increased to 23 by the UCI Management Committee”.

AIGCP, “Invitation of UCI ProTeams for 2026”.

Bardiani CSF 7 Saber, “History”.

SpazioCiclismo, “Top30 battle, Bruno Reverberi’s anger”.

Veneto Classic, “Teams”.

Domestique, “UCI rankings: UAE dominate as Picnic face licence deadline and Pinarello-Q36.5 eye WorldTour spot”.

Escape Collective, “Rockets confirmed among Giro wildcards along with Bardiani and Polti-VisitMalta”.

tuttobiciweb, “VF Group Bardiani CSF Faizanè at the Giro.
