How we work

Who publishes, where the numbers come from, what artificial intelligence does and how we correct mistakes.

Who publishes

La fagIAnata is an online road cycling magazine, a project of Tinke, the Reggio Emilia company that builds artificial intelligence systems (SMART – Strategy Marketing Technology S.r.l.).

Where the numbers come from

From the official UCI results, the organizers, open archives and weather models; the rest we calculate ourselves. Photos always carry their author and licence.

Artificial intelligence

It helps us sort the data, do the maths, follow live races, translate, and write race news with Mnemosyne. A piece goes out only if it passes our checks. It doesn’t invent quotes, doesn’t generate photos that look real and stays away from gossip and suspicion.

Numbers with a range

Every estimate comes with its range: not “6.12 W/kg” but “between 5.8 and 6.4”. Estimates made during live races are marked with “about”.

The fagIAno

The fagIAno is our artificial intelligence model for races: it gives every starter a probability of winning, making the podium, finishing in the top ten. We build it ourselves and use it only if it predicts better than the benchmarks. Before the start we freeze its probabilities with a digital fingerprint and never touch them again; after the finish we publish the receipt, even when we got it wrong. The running total is in the fagIAno record.

The fagIAno has a voice

You can talk to the fagIAno through the bubble at the bottom right: it answers with our data, thanks to Mimir. What happens to your messages is explained in the privacy policy.

Race numbers

At the end of race news: average speed, weather at the finish, how much the race split up, and climbing watts. An item appears only if the data exists.

The climbs, measured

In the analyses, climb by climb: time, speed, VAM (metres of climbing per hour) and watts per kilo, estimated with a physical model and always with a range. The same model powers the Climb timer.

The Number

After a finish that matters, sometimes, a single figure from the archive of official results, with its scope: “the youngest since at least 2009” means we don’t know about before.

History

In the Stories we go back to the cycling of the past, with sources. The results of yesterday teach us to read today’s races; and history reminds us that this is a sport made of passion.

Mistakes and corrections

Found a mistake? Tell us. We fix it with a dated note at the end of the piece and list it on the Corrections page.
