Noa Isidore (Decathlon CMA CGM Team, France) won the Coppa Bernocchi on 5 October, in the sprint of a group of 33 riders, in 3h53’28”. Tommaso Dati (Team Ukyo, Italy) was second, Orluis Alberto Aular Sanabria (Movistar Team, Venezuela) third.

The race

The Coppa Bernocchi was decided at the last moment, after a day in which the peloton let the breakaway go and caught it only just before the line. Noa Isidore, a 22-year-old Frenchman of Decathlon CMA CGM, won, beating Tommaso Dati in the sprint.

The breakaway formed in the first kilometres. Spain’s Sergio Samitier (Cofidis), Ben Granger (Solution Tech NIPPO Rali) and Samuele Zoccarato (MBH Bank CSB Telecom Fort) went clear. Samuel Fernandez (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) was with them too, but later lost contact. The peloton kept them in sight and controlled the race without difficulty.

The race came alive about 50 kilometres from the finish. On the Piccolo Stelvio climb, Jhonatan Narvaez (UAE Team Emirates XRG) attacked. Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost), Brieuc Rolland and Lorenzo Germani (Groupama-FDJ United) and Florian Stork (Tudor) went with him. The small group chased the escapees but never managed to reach them.

Behind, the sprinters’ teams did the work. Powless and Filippo Ganna (Netcompany Ineos) pulled on the approach to the finish, while the peloton swelled with the fast riders who had been dropped on the climb. Samitier, Granger and Zoccarato held out to the end, then were caught 2 kilometres from the finish.

In the finale there was a crash in the middle of the bunch, which also took down Ganna. Isidore came through unscathed and held the right wheel until the sprint.

Dati, in Team Ukyo colours, went first and looked to have the kick to make it. Isidore waited for the right moment, caught him almost on the line and beat him by the narrowest of margins. Third came the Venezuelan sprinter Orluis Alberto Aular Sanabria (Movistar). Behind them four Italians finished in the top nine: Romele, Donati, Vendrame and Baroncini.

For Isidore it is a third professional win. It comes in the Trittico Lombardo classic, where another Frenchman, Dorian Godon, won last year, and who this time finished fifth.

The first of the Italians is Tommaso Dati, Team Ukyo, 2nd on the same time as the winner; among the top ten there are 5 Italians. 107 riders finished out of 168 starters.
